Every manufacturer seems to make them, but the Glock remains one of the most popular options. Also in Glock's own line, you have options like the Glock 42 VS 43. Glock's reputation for reliability and quality keeps users coming back for more.
Since their introduction, the Glock 42 and 43 have proven to be quality subcompact guns with affordable pricing. While some Glock owners prefer one model over the other, many own both. The size advantages of subcompact guns may seem obvious, but what are the disadvantages? With so many options available in the same category, how do you decide which gun is right for you?

The Glock 42 hit the market first, the G43 followed and achieved the same commercial success as its smaller brother. After the success of the Glock 43, Glock expanded its single stack series to include the G43X and G48. This sub-compact series focuses on reduced size and weight with improved concealed carry ergonomics and performance.
The first thing you will notice about the glock 42 VS 43 is the size difference. Looking at the two guns side by side, they have comparable dimensions, with the G43 being slightly wider (G43 1.06″ vs G42 0.98″ wide) and taller (G43 4.25″ vs G42 4.13″ long) with the magazine installed. However, the fact that the G43 is also slightly longer is not immediately noticeable unless you hold both guns side by side (G43 6.26″ vs G42 5.94″ length).

The Glock 43 is 30% heavier (G43 20.64 oz/1.29 lbs vs. G42 16 oz/1 lbs) than the G42 loaded with comparable ammo. Part of the extra weight of this is the extra length of the G43. Both guns feel well balanced in the hand, with neither feeling top-heavy like some competing sub-compact guns tend to do. The weight gain goes to the glock 42.
The G43 has a 3.41″ barrel, the G42 has a 3.25″ barrel. Both are standard manufacturer Glock Marksman (GMB) barrels. The barrel of the Glock 43 weighs 2.6 oz and is 1.9mm thick. The barrel of the Glock 42 weighs 1.9 oz and is 1.5mm thick. Both the G42 and G43 are very accurate at 25 yards from the bench.
I tested the accuracy of both rifles by shooting them at IDPA cardboard targets from the web bench with the Fiochi FMJ. I shot two five rounds with the gun, using four different targets. I made a round with the G43 and 6.3" with the G42. At twenty-five yards, those differences are negligible. In my opinion, both guns fit and perform well according to Glock's listed specifications.
The height and width of the G43 is slightly wider than the G42 (G43 1.06″ vs. G42 0.98″). Looking at both sides of the gun, the difference in width is visible. I found, despite the difference, the G42 fits well in most holsters. The only noticeable difference in the holsters was below due to the difference in barrel length.

Both guns have beaver backs, textured hand grips and large textured magazine releases. The G43 has a slightly thicker grip (G43 0.95″ vs. G42 0.85″) which increases stability in the hand. The travel distance of the G43 is greater than the G42 (G43 2.56 vs. G42 2.4″). In my older hands, this made it easier to find the G43 trigger, as the gun slide has more room for his finger to move from its rest.
Both sub-combined guns have some ergonomic compromises, so you can fit them into a smaller pack. It should be noted that the Glock 43 in this comparison features an aftermarket grip made by Talon Grips.
The grip length of both guns feels short in size without the magazine inserted. With the standard flat magazine installed, my pinky finger reached under the magazine on both sides of the gun. I had to use a factory magazine with an extension slide on both guns to make it more comfortable when shooting. If you have small to medium hands, you may find that shorter zippers are more comfortable.
On larger sub-linked guns like the G48 or G43X, the arms are more balanced. Compared to the hands, the G42 and G43 generally feel like a shorter good buy. A certain revolution of the spread through both guns is constantly adjusted to my hand held. Unfortunately, at the time of this writing, there are no factory backstrap options to improve by hand or gun.
Glock 42 Review: A Good Self Defense Pistol?
If you've shot any e-star balls, you already know what I'm coming up with. The "squishy" trigger on these guns does not inspire a sense of factory confidence. There is just the right amount of takeup and the brakes are up after the mechanical work. I put both guns on a digital trigger pull gauge, three trigger pulls for each, and I got an average of about 5.5 pounds.
Are six rounds really enough? This is a beautiful question. Six rounds offer one round more than the capacity of standard revolvers. Bringing more people around in the room can make seven nice, but is it enough? Critics of carrying one stack of handguns for self-defense often point to the limitations of six-round magazines. While higher capacity options such as the G43x and G48 (10+1) are available, are the older G42 and G43 models?
Not silent. Aftermarket manufacturers offer +2, +2, and +3+3 magazine base pads for the Glock 42 and 43. With the machined aluminum +3 base pad installed, either the gun becomes a 9+1 pistol caliber, reducing the advantage of today's simplicity. Stack glocks. Magazine extensions increase the size and weight of both guns, but also make them more competitive. As with any aftermarket accessory, be sure to thoroughly test your weapon after it is installed to ensure it is working properly.
The G42 crack handles better than the G43. Although I don't have a scientific method to explain it, I do have an accurate explanation. The G42 weighs about 1 lbs loaded, the most common self defense .380 ACP bullet weighing 90 gr. The average velocity of a 90gr bullet leaving a G42 3.25″ barrel is 976 FPS. This gives the G42 a muzzle force of 190 foot lbs with a 90gr .380 ACP bullet.

The G43 weighs about 1.29 lbs loaded, the most common self defense 9mm bullet weighs 124 gr. The average velocity of a 124gr bullet leaving a 3.41″ G43 barrel is 1168 FPS. This gives the G43 a muzzle force of 376 foot pounds with a 9mm 124 gr bullet. This difference of 186 foot lbs means the Glock 43 has nearly double the muzzle energy of the G42.
With that explanation, it makes sense why the Glock 43 feels 'snappier' than the G42. Follow up shots are easier with the G42 and pressing the trigger in quick succession feels more natural. The advantage goes to G42 for dispensing refuse.

I used a ballistic chronograph to test popular defense ammo for both calibers. I shot ten rounds of Speer Gold Dot 9mm JHP 124gr +P, and a Federal HST 9mm JHP 147gr with G43. Ten-round Speer Gold Dot .380 ACP JHP 90gr, and Federal HST .380 ACP JHP 99gr were also tested with the G42.

Data captured by the chronograph was recorded at a distance recommended by the chronograph manufacturer. It is a calibrated unit designed to capture the ballistics of a pistol. The mechanical function and accuracy of both guns was excellent, I had no problems feeding, firing or ejecting.
